Anchors Away Sailboat – Public Art Project

It was approximately a month ago when I submitted my design proposal for a public art project named, “Anchors Away.” This particular event is a fundraiser for the SMILES corporation. They help children and adults with disabilities through the help of working with horses.  Their mission statement reads,

“SMILES transcends traditional therapeutic methods by offering challenged individuals of all ages the joy of participating in an equine assisted program which provides social, emotional, physical and personal rewards.”

The design that I submitted has a “day” side and a “night” side. And on each side there will be sculptures of children riding on the boat. Actually, they are doing more than merely “riding” on the boat, they are busy on the boat searching for stars to catch and painting the sky as they fly by on their boat powered by a propeller on the sail. The name of the boat on the night side is “The Star Catcher” and on the day side it is “Sunlight Delight.”

Near the end of March, I got a voice-mail message from someone at SMILES letting me know that my proposal was accepted as one of the designs for the Anchors Away project. I needed to pick up the sailboat a few days later. We picked up the 4 foot tall by 4 foot wide sailboat and now it’s home and ready for me to decorate.

During the last few days, I’ve been trying to work on a couple pieces for the sailboat; the propeller and the first child sculpture from the stacked up children. Stay tuned for “work-in-progress” updates for my sailboat sculpture!

Ahhh! I finally found the “story” to your sailboat project – and what a wonderful story and project it is! Kudos to you! I *love* your design idea!

I was just wondering where you get the sailboat from. My husband has a sailboat and I would love to make him one for our garden.
