Hand-stitched felt hearts

This year I found so many delightful Valentine’s projects to create. There were simply too many for me to try this Valentine’s, so I selected a few to try this year.  One of the “inspiration” projects that I chose were these conversation hearts made from felt at the Plaid Enterprises site. Seeing them prompted me to try making my own felt hearts, but putting my own spin on them. I bought a few sheets of red and pink colors of felt and a little bit of embroidery floss to stitch them with. For quite awhile I’ve been longing to learn more embroidery stitches, so I really wanted to play around with stitching something on the hearts. I have yet to learn more stitches so I was limited with the designs on my hearts."c" initial stitched felt heartThe first heart I created as a “test” one and I used some cream colored felt that I discovered I had hiding in my craft stash. I decided to do something simple on my test piece, so I stitched my initial “C” onto the heart and stitched a few buttons on for embellishments. I also have this really awesome trim that I’ve been wanting to try out on something and it coordinated with my first heart. I stitched the trim to the back piece and to disguise the stitching, I added a button to the outside back piece. The next step was the most complicated, blanket stitching both of my heart pieces together. I had a blanket stitch diagram to look at, but I struggled with knowing how to stitch it correctly. After some trial and error I finally got the knack of it and I was completely elated.

Red & Cream felt heartAfter stitching my first heart, I was completely hooked on stitching some more hearts. And I thought I’d try to use my Big Shot die cut machine and my Spellbinders Scalloped Heart die templates to cut out some felt with to use with my stitched hearts. It worked so then I had a variety of sizes of scalloped hearts that I could stitch onto my original heart pieces. For my next heart I stitched two different sized felt hearts to a larger red heart piece that I cut out.beaded flower felt heartAs I worked on my hearts, I thought of other ways to embellish them. There were some flower shaped beads I had somewhere in my craft stash and I went on a scavenger hunt to find them. After searching high and low, I found them. For my third heart piece, I got busy stitching the flowered beads on a red heart. I was really pleased with how it turned out. There they are. My first set of three felt stitched hearts, but they won’t be the last.
